These earrings are made with wings of a madagascan sunset moth. It is a colorful Moth often mistaken for a butterfly. This specimen is also called in rainbow moth. The photos show the outter and inner wings. It is black, bright orange, fuscia, green, turquoise and white markings on the wings. This is a naturally expired moth purchased from a licensed supplier in Ontario Canada. They are made with Wings layered between two pieces plastic laminate that will keep it protected, however, it is not waterproof. At the top of the wing there are black agate beads. Set on surgical steel ear wires.
Butterflies & Insects used in my pieces have been sustainably raised and bred on insect farms globally and play an important role in Conservation programs. Many governments and conservation programs (WWF & Nature Canada) teach sustainable practices of raising insects for economic purposes for livelihood rather than jobs that destroy rainforests such as slash and burn agricultural farming and logging. It is important to support such conservation programs that teach these sustainable economic alternatives.
